First Solo

Friday, April 29th, 2005

It started out as a beautiful day with one dark cloud on the horizon. My Law Exam!

The Plan was to revise with Liz at Soloflight, take the exam at lunch time, and then go up with Liz in the afternoon to sort out my wobbly approaches. My landings were quite good but just before touch down I would be wandering side to side and though more luck then judgement I would land with the wheels lined up on the runway.

The Law Exam seems to be an exercise in legalise and I was very disappointed but not surprised when I failed it by a couple of percent. The day was not going as per the flight plan.

So after lunch it was a trip up in ‘POM’ for a few circuits with Liz. This was better, she pointed out I was not being forcefull enough with the rudder. After the first landing the next two were spot on. Then the moment I had waited for. She sent me off on my own. To be honest I cannot remember much about it. But after touchdown the exhileration and happness was beyond expression. The feeling of elation lastest many days. Liz and Mel at Soloflight could hardly believe the size of my grin!

That night lots of Champagne was drunk!
